Some of you have asked me for updates on my sabbatical trip… here’s chapter one and hopefully there should be one for each stop providing the availability of wifi connections!

Let’s start with my reasons for undertaking such a long trip away from my beloved children, family and friends.
As I write these lines, I’m busy packing and sorting the essential from the trivial. However I believe it’s high time I addressed the main purpose of this blog, my conviction that our world is cosmopolitan in the sense that humanity always moved, even the indigenous part of us, met and cross fertilized artistically and religiously the various cultures in presence.

Ce qui m’attirait au Pays Basque était ma découverte cet été de la présence basque à Terre-Neuve et au Labrador. Poursuivant mon fil d’Ariane Atlantique, j’ai cherché (et trouvé) les Vikings et leurs sagas mais en prime j’ai découvert une présence basque antérieure de deux siècles témoignant d’une témérité et d’un esprit d’entreprise encore trop méconnu! Ce que je n’avais plus pas prévu était que le vote catalan en faveur de l’indépendance s’y produirait deux jours avant mon arrivée…et l’extraordinaire richesse culturelle que j’y découvrirais!
Un opéra de chambre joué dans le cadre intime du Grütli. Que demander de mieux en ce flamboyant début d’automne?L’histoire est émouvante, la représentation est efficace de simplicité, le livret poétique la musique sublime ….du Britten comme on l’aime! De la belle ouvrage en somme!
