Opera

No art is more cosmopolitan than opera… because no language is more international than music…. Apart from maths of course! In operas, we delight in these antic or mythical stories, dramas, comedies, reflecting contemporary societies or immemorial concerns in Italian, German, French, English…to name some of its de facto languages, but also Russian, its de cuore one!

My passion for operas started with my interest for stage management…and it ended with a fascination for the voices, the musical arrangements and the delightfully
incredible stories. I was so intrigued by the Manaus opera that it was the initial reason for me to fly to Brazil In 2013…and I visited as well the Opera of Rio which is outstanding…Anyhow, I realized I had quite a collection of opera booklets from the Grand Théâtre…so let’s share what I have…and a couple of other places in over 146 recorded pieces…and more to come!

Well, this sounded like a bygone era for a while… I literally broke into total despair the day I received the heartbreaking notice that, after all my 2020 opera season at the Geneva Grand Theatre, my summer in Glyndebourne was cancelled on May 5, 2020 due to Covid…and it took me two days to recover!

… and two years later, on August 4, 5&6, we finally returned to what remains for me the most fascinating and exciting opera venue where I have never been disappointed!

j’ai beaucoup aimé la représentation d’hier soir… Don Giovanni est une œuvre particulièrement intelligente et intéressante…pleine de sens cachés et avec laquelle Stefan Boesch joue beaucoup en se détachant parfois totalement du livret dans un décalé qui m’a agacée avant de m’amuser franchement! Patrizia Ciofi (Donna Anna) est formidable et Simon Keenlyside (Don Giovanni) pas mal du tout mais c’est totalement Leporello qui prend tout l’espace scénique avec un Thorsten Grümbel meilleur à la fin qu’au début. Il est vrai qu’avant l’entracte j’avais les yeux qui papillonnaient un peu voire beaucoup (probablement en raison d’une folle semaine londonienne du 26 au 31 mai.

Désolée si j’hurle avec les vieux loups réacs mais le pathétique spectacle d’autoflagellation de cette “Europe à la parcimonieuse hospitalité”, dégouline de bien pensance imbécile et constitue une trahison et une giffle à l’intelligence de Mozart! Je n’ai rien contre les réinterprétations si elles respectent l’esprit de l’auteur. Le metteur en scène s’est donné un mal fou pour que le bonheur des airs bien interprétés par musiciens et chanteurs soit totalement gâché par le fil discursif. C’était affligeant et je m’interroge sur la pente très savonneuse que prend le Grand Théâtre. Paris, avec ses Indes galantes, a compris qu’on n’attrape pas les mouches avec du vinaigre…

It was daring, inspired and witty!

Here is one of the most aesthetically rejoicing performances I saw at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva, Porgy & Bess by the New York Harlem Theater in February 2015.
